Summary: After 6 months of use: I'm going back to shaving in the shower
Comment: I'm giving this product two stars instead of one because, for all the reasons other reviewers have named, this is the cream of the epilator crop. If you're going to try one, this is the one to try. And if, like me, you decide epilation just isn't for you, you still have an electric razor to use (I use it to shave the back of my boyfriend's neck between hair cuts, and I've also used the trimmer attachment to trim the hair "down there").
Despite its high quality, though, I'm giving this product *only* two stars because after six months of use, I'm going back to shaving daily in the shower. The reasons:
(1) Despite daily exfoliation and using a lotion with alpha-hydroxy in it, my legs are still covered in red bumps from ingrown hairs. I have very fine, thin hair -- so fine and thin that you can't even see it on my arms unless you look very closely -- and maybe that's part of why I'm having such a problem with ingrowns. I suspect that with coarser hair, it might "poke through" the skin easier as it grows, so you might have fewer ingrowns than I did.
(2) It hurts. I've been a waxer in the past, both salon and at-home, and I would rate the pain from this higher than the pain associated with waxing. The big difference is that the waxing pain is a quick thing, a zip and it's done, while using this product requires repeatedly and intentionally inflicting serious pain on yourself for extended periods of time. Legs, it's not too bad; underarms, it's bearable most of the time; bikini area, I couldn't stand it long enough to use it. And I have a pretty high pain tolerance.
(3) It takes a long time. Granted, I'm 5' 10" tall and have long legs, but it still takes about 30 minutes at a time to do my legs properly. And who has 30 minutes to do that, really? It just meant I didn't do it as often as I would have liked. The directions say that to use it properly, you should take 10 seconds with each pass up 1/2 of your leg (ankle to knee, or knee up). Try it yourself next time you're shaving your legs: take a full ten seconds for each pass of 1/2 of your leg, overlapping slightly because the width of the epilator head is slightly smaller than a disposable razor, and see how long it takes you.
(4) Despite doing a really careful job, I never even ONCE in SIX MONTHS managed to get truly "silky smooth" legs. With a razor in the shower, I can come out after 5 minutes and have legs so soft that men never fail to comment on them. With this thing, it never happened. Period.
(5) Regrowth was much faster than I expected. You couldn't see it, but you could feel regrowth almost the next day, even on the parts that were smooth immediately after epilation.
I'm glad I bought this product because now I know, unquestionably, that epilation is not the answer to my hair-removal needs. However, I can't wait to go out and buy a razor and shaving cream again.

Comment: I was a little worried at first about getting this item. Waxing hurts to high heaven and I tried laser hair removal and couldn't continue because of the pain. But, still I ordered this thinking that 1. it has a razor attachment so even if the epilitor part was unbearable atleast I could shave. When it came I was so excited, I read the directions and closed my eyes and tried it. While there is some pain it was no where near the pain I was expecting. I would imagine a hot bath/shower and some Tylenol PM would reduce the pain completely, but even with out that I will have no problems with this wonderful item. Try it, you'll like it.

Comment: I had this on my Amazon Wish List and got it for Christmas. I've had the unopened box on my desk since then and I've glanced at it several times a day. I hesitated trying it out because I really wanted it to work and I was afraid that it would be too painful. I had used an epilator years ago (MANY years ago) and it was a torture machine. It hurt so much!
I was browsing Amazon several weeks ago and I came across this one and I read the reviews and I was amazed that so many people liked it! Yes, people did say there was some pain, but somehow they were able to withstand it and get the wonderful results of smooth skin and not having to shave for a long time.
I wanted those results, too! So, I decided to put it on my wish list and see if anyone got it for me. When I opened my gift on Christmas morning, I was excited and scared at the same time. Ok, I had to try it out now...
I am so happy to say that after trying this out this morning, I can use this! And it works well!
I tried out the head with the massaging rollers first and at first, OUCH! It really hurt. But, somehow, the more I used it the more it felt ok.
Then, I took out the user's guide and read the instructions and found that there was another head (called the EfficiencyPro clip) that was for people that are used to epilators and worked much faster to remove the hair. Ok, I decided to try that out and I was able to use that one, too! And it WAS faster! There was more sensation, but I wouldn't really call it pain. It's hard to describe. For me, using the EfficiencyPro clip is similar to grabbing several eyebrow hairs when tweezing. You can tweeze one hair out at a time and then massage the area and then go on to the next hair, but once you are used to the tweezing, you just go in and grab as many as you can to get the pain over faster! It's the same with the EfficiencyPro clip. Things are done much faster and for me, there was less pain because of the speed of the hair removal.
I did my first leg using the head with the Advanced Massaging Rollers and the second leg using the EfficiencyPro clip and did my second leg in less than half the time.
It left my skin super soft and smooth. I love it!

Comment: I bought the Braun Silk-epil X'elle in 2006 and still use it and love it. The first few times it hurt like crazy and I'd shout with each pass over my legs and arms. My neighbors must have thought I was crazy. Over time, however, the pain has lessened and the hair has grown back thinner and there is much less of it growing back. Consequently it now takes less time to epilate and it doesn't hurt half as much though it still gets stingy if there is a lot of growth to clean up. I have to do this about once a week to keep my legs smooth. As for ingrown hairs, I found that exfoliating in a hot shower prior to epilating then using a lotion (PFB Vanish is sold here at Amazon in a kit) made to prevent ingrown hairs afterwards reduces the bumps quite a bit. I've been using the Braun on my bikini area, arms and legs and absolutely will never return to the daily shaving routine! It's not painless, it's stingy for lack of a better description; hair does continue to grow and you will have to do this about once a week; and you will get some ingrown hairs, but even with all these things, it still beats the chore of shaving. The Braun does a great job.

Finally I can stop shaving!
Received the product in 3 days! The epilator was pre-assembled although the manual showed how to assemble the product. I also found some vaseline like substance, perhaps it was used during the assembly, but the product was brand new. I started using it without any preparation like people in their reviews had suggested (warm shower to reduce pain, pain medication etc). Actually if you can withstand threading, this pain is minimal. I don't understand why pain is an issue. I would definately not recommend consuming pain killers etc, it is insane, come on!! after all we have waxed or threaded before and the pain does not kill you does it?? I do agree that initially it hurts, but it is the same plucking sensation from threading and as you epilate on skin patch by patch, even this pain becomes negligible. I would recommend chatting with your friend or watching tv or listening to music while epilating to distract yourself from the pain. The process is super fast and I took 15 min to epilate both arms, fingers to shoulders. The smart light is very effective and the massaging rollers also indeed reduce pain. However after your epilate you will notice small bumps on the skin so you must wash the area with cold water, dab it dry and then massage some soothing lotion over it.Skin feels like silk. I would recommend first-timers to use the slow speed setting and enjoy the experience without worrying about the pain. Afterall I am sure we women are capable of withstanding worse pains :)
I have epilated before this, roughly 9 years ago I used my aunt's Braun. That one was very painful and slow so you could feel the hairs being plucked one by one, however I can assure you that Braun has advanced a lot over the last decade because this epilator is so much less painful compared to the old one. I try it on the bikini line gradually patch by patch. Shaving for me has been a bad experience, scraping of skin, burning and tingling sensation etc, which is unhealthy and can cause the skin to get septic(infections). Thanks to this braun!
Relax and don't worry about the pain- the results are simply wonderful!
